Effect of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate(cas 151-21-3) on the Conformation of Polyethylene Glycol in Solution

In order to investigate the interaction between small molecules and macromolecules in solution, the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate(cas 151-21-3)(SDS) on the molecular size of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in solution was studied by viscosity method. The molecular weight of PEG, the change of the mean square end of the noncompleteness is dependent on the addition of SDS.

The results show that SDS(cas 151-21-3) and PEG form a complex in the solution, and SDS is bound to the PEG polymer chain in the form of small micelles cluster. Because of the ionization of SDS micelles on the complex, (SDS) /m (PEG) 4.09, the adsorption of SDS micelles on the PEG molecular chain reached saturation after m (SDS) /m (PEG) 4.09, and the viscosity of the system was increased, PEG molecular chain expansion to achieve the maximum molecular size, no longer affected by the increase in SDS small molecule concentration.
