Effect of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate(cas 151-21-3) on the Dispersion Performance of Carbon Nanotube Suspension

Using sodium dodecyl sulfate(cas 151-21-3) as the dispersant, the carbon nanotube suspension was prepared. The effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) on the surface properties of carbon nanotubes was studied by measuring the isothermal adsorption curves of SDS on the surface of carbon nanotubes and the Zeta potentials of the suspensions. The results showed that the addition of SDS could change the Zeta potential from -28 mV to about -48 mV, and when the SDS concentration of c(SDS) was about 2.0 × 10-3 mol / L, the maximum potential was reached and finally stabilized. The isothermal adsorption curve on the surface of nanotubes is a typical double-platform (LS) adsorption curve. SDS adsorption in the low concentration (0.7 × 10-3 ~ 1.2 × 10-3 mol / L range) in the first platform adsorption value; then sodium dodecyl sulfate(cas 151-21-3) concentration is further increased, the adsorption capacity increased rapidly in the 2 × 10-3 Mol /L near the saturation adsorption, adsorption capacity to reach the second platform. 

The results showed that sodium dodecyl sulfate(cas 151-21-3)  could be used as the dispersant of carbon nanotubes in aqueous system. The optimum concentration range of sodium dodecyl sulfate(cas 151-21-3)  was 2.0 × 10-3 ~ 8.0 × 10-3 mol / L, which was effective by electrostatic repulsion and steric effect To prevent the reunion of carbon nanotubes.
